Sensory Testing

Monofilament Testing – Using small, hair-like filaments the skin is tested for its ability to perceive the sense of touch. The filaments are standardized and provide an objective measurement regarding the return of sensation following nerve injury

Sensory Retraining – Sensory retraining has been shown to improve hand function following nerve injury. As nerves regenerate, sensation gradually returns. At the proper stage, this program is introduced to improve tactile discrimination and touch localization. This involves the ability to tell the difference between varying degrees of softness or roughness in addition to the location where the stimulus is perceived. The improved sensory function correlates to improved coordination and function in activities of daily living.
