Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP) Provides Optimal Care

University Hospitals Center for Lifelong Health at University Hospitals Bedford Medical Center helps ensure optimal care for older adults in the hospital with a unique program entitled Hospital Elder Life Program, or HELP. This evidence-based, patient care program helps prevent delirium, a sudden state of confusion or change in mental status and loss of functioning. HELP also prevents falls and enables older adults to return home and maintain their independence.

Providing the Best Care for Older Adults

The primary goals of HELP include:

  • Transitioning from hospital to home
  • Maintaining cognitive and physical functioning
  • Maximizing independence
  • Preventing unplanned hospital returns

HELP also works to:

  • Better orient hospitalized older adults to their surroundings
  • Keep patients as physically mobile as possible
  • Meet their needs for nutrition, fluids and sleep
