2015 Annual Report

Dear Friend,

In 1866, the people of Cleveland created a hospital where “the most needy would be considered the most worthy.” A century and a half later, UH is still serving our community – the community that created us and has sustained us ever since.

A humble hospital in a small house has become a thriving super-regional health system with facilities across Northeast Ohio and anchored by the world-renowned University Hospitals Case Medical Center. Nearly 30,000 physicians, nurses and employees now deliver care to 1 million individual patients every year.

Today, our UH influence spans the globe. Here at home and around the world, people thank UH for life, health and happiness. Physicians who trained here are now all over the world, treating patients and teaching colleagues. Breakthrough therapies, cures and best practices developed at UH have elevated standards of care globally.

Yet, home is still what matters most. And UH has continued to invest heavily in our community. Among our achievements, we:

  • Expanded our mission regionally and met the rising demand for UH’s highest-quality care by bringing UH Portage Medical Center, UH Samaritan Medical Center and UH St. John Medical Center into our system.
  • Established a Level I adult trauma center and a regional trauma network so severely injured patients can quickly get lifesaving care, and to improve regional disaster preparedness.
  • Made it easier and more convenient for consumers to find and connect to UH providers through technology, including a care-scheduling mobile app with Zocdoc.
  • Responded to growing needs by opening UH Avon Rehabilitation Hospital and expanding UH Home Care.

Through more than 14,000 gifts last year, our friends and supporters endorsed our direction, contributing $133.5 million to UH.This philanthropic support, and the guidance from our volunteers and the civic leaders on our Board of Directors, are positioning UH for the next 150 years.

Looking ahead, we’re reimagining caregiving to prevent and manage disease in the community, rather than just responding to it at a hospital. We announced the new UH Rainbow Center for Women & Children, a comprehensive health and wellness hub for our neighbors. We’re adding a $30 million Proton Therapy Center to attack some of the hardest-to-treat cancers. And we expect to conclude our ambitious $1.5 billion Discover the Difference campaign successfully in 2017.

All we do is for you, and we thank you for your support to our mission:
To Heal. To Teach. To Discover.
