Patient Messages

Chrissie and Lily

Patient and family engagement is carefully considered in UH’s environmental stewardship efforts. Talking to patients and families about needs from their community in connection to current Greening UH initiatives positively impacts patient experience at UH and public health in our surrounding communities. You will read about this connection in the following report in various initiatives, from increasing access to and knowledge of local, fresh produce to decreasing chemical use in cleaning techniques and products for healthy indoor air to prioritizing patient parking as a part of a healthy transportation strategy. As a network of long-established health care institutions within the Northeast Ohio community, we will do all we can to constructively interact with patients and families so that we can contribute to a healthier environment that improves the quality of experience within our walls and the quality of life in our neighborhoods.

A bunch of carrots

My family and I represent three generations of patients at University Hospitals – my husband and I, our children and our children’s children – who receive dedicated and heartfelt care from nurses and doctors at the UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s and UH MacDonald Women’s outpatient clinics. I have a personal passion for improving community access to fresh, healthful and local produce and as the leader of Gardening in the District Community Garden, I highly value the work that UH is doing to connect its patients to local food resources as well as healthful eating habits through programs such as Healthy Harvest. Healthy eating to me is not just something we should do, it’s something we should live, embody and incorporate into our everyday lives. The benefits of a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables essential to healthy development are countless and, in some cases, lifesaving!

I also find energy and water efficiency, safer chemical use, and a variety of greener transportation options important to the health of my family and am thankful that UH has these as values in their sustainability program.
