Health Advocacy

We are committed to advocating for policies and practices that advance environmental health beyond our walls. Our clinicians are national leaders in environmental health advocacy, and are active in this work through medical professional societies such as the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Thoracic Society.

In keeping with our academic mission, we educate trainees and our peers on topics at the intersection of sustainability and public health in a variety of settings: resident advocacy rotations, grand rounds presentations, and presentations in national webinars and conferences.

We inform public policy through participation in local, regional and national events such as the PEW Charitable Trust legislative briefing during the CDC’s 2015 Get Smart About Antibiotics Week, highlighting the importance of antibiotic stewardship in animal agriculture. Our clinicians have been active in education and advocacy related to climate change and health, participating in a round table about regional impacts of climate change with national and local elected officials and other leaders, and writing educational pieces for local media about the links between climate change and health in Northeast Ohio.

National leadership

UH is a founding member of the Health Care Without Harm Health Care Climate Council, and was represented in a 2015 White House summit on Climate Change and Public Health. We share best practices with peers nationally that have transformative impact: our antibiotic-free meat purchasing initiative has been shared with other health systems, adding to a growing collective demand that is helping to transform animal agriculture toward more sustainable practices.

We actively participate in the Health Care Without Harm and Practice Greenhealth networks, including Market Transformation Groups, to collaborate with our peers around the country.

Local and regional service

We participate in the Greater University Circle Initiative, leveraging our purchasing and hiring power to support sustainable, inclusive and vibrant economic development in our community.

We also support the Sustainable Cleveland 2019 (SC2019) initiative through representation on the SC2019 Stewardship Council and active participation in SC2019 working groups, and we regularly partner with community groups to advance outreach on specific topics.

We are members of the Ohio Hospital Association’s Environmental Leadership Council, which advances environmental sustainability in health care through peer learning and best practices adoption.
