A Message from the Office of Sustainability

Meet Sarah, Matt and Aparna. Together our team collaborates with leaders across the organization and community as the University Hospitals Office of Sustainability. Our mission is to support the well-being of patients, staff and community by embedding environmental considerations into UH business practices. This enhances the organization’s performance in quality, efficiency and wellness. A 2016 transition of our team structure creates an opportunity to embed sustainability in the clinical realm as a public health imperative as Aparna moves to a clinical leadership position while maintaining an advisory role in Sustainability, and Sarah and Matt assume expanded responsibilities in their roles as Sustainability Manager and Sustainability Specialist, respectively.

UH’s progress in sustainability would not be possible without the incredible teamwork and shared leadership embraced by individual employees and their departments to implement key initiatives, and 2015 was no exception. Together, each and every collaborator within the health system is redefining environmental sustainability as an essential public health imperative, broadening stakeholders’ understanding of what it means to be well.

In this year’s annual report, we feature not only the topical areas that comprise the Greening UH program, but also some of the inspiring employees who have been critical in helping UH become a national leader in sustainable health care practices. Much like in this message, you’ll “meet” the people who are creating positive change in the following areas:

HEALTHIER FOOD, WASTE REDUCTION, LEANER ENERGY USE, SAFER CHEMICALS AND GREENER PURCHASING, HEALTHIER TRANSPORTATION, CLIMATE ACTION and EDUCATION AND OUTREACH

In this 2015 Sustainability Progress Report, we are pleased to share the ways in which University Hospitals seeks to support an environment of wellness, for our community in Northeast Ohio, and beyond, to live happier, healthier lives both now and in the future.
