Healthier Transportation

Improving How We Are Moving

Encouraging alternatives to single-occupant-car commuting benefits health and air quality, and can save money, too. UH supports healthy transportation programs such as telecommuting options, a carpooling matching portal, subsidized transit passes and a flexible parking program for carpool and public-transit pass holders.

NOACA Commuter Choice award

NOACA Commuter Choice Award Badge

Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency, the regional transportation and environmental planning agency, awarded UH Case Medical Center a bronze-level award in 2014 in acknowledgement of its practice and promotion of environmentally friendly commute options and infrastructure including transit, carpooling and bicycling.

National Bike Challenge, 2014

One hundred and thirty employees participated in a systemwide wellness and transportation initiative to increase bike riding as a mode of commuting and recreation. Participants collectively avoided over 15,000 pounds CO2 emissions, saved over $25,000 in fuel expenses and burned over 1.4 million calories while earning HealthMiles to decrease their personal health insurance costs. This employee engagement program is being expanded in 2015 as a wider healthy transportation strategy gains momentum.

University Circle Transportation Task Force

Leaders from UH actively participated in the stakeholder based “Moving Greater University Circle” Transportation & Infrastructure Task Force project beginning in late 2014. The project team seeks to understand, evaluate and make recommendations to improve various aspects of the transportation environment, including healthy transportation options, of the University Circle area of Cleveland, where UH Case Medical Center is located. The three-phase project will continue to seek feedback from stakeholders through the middle of 2015 as participants work toward a final goal of transportation management implementation plans for 2016.
