Welcome UH Elyria and UH Parma Medical Centers

University Hospitals welcomed two major health care facilities in January of 2014, UH Elyria and UH Parma medical centers. Both centers actively participate in the system-level Sustainability Council, pursue facility-level sustainability initiatives and have begun internally tracking HHI-related goals through UH’s sustainability dashboard.

UH Elyria Medical Center

UH Parma Medical Center

UH Parma Medical Center

University Hospitals Parma Medical Center has a long history of dedicated care in its founding cities of Parma, Parma Heights, Brooklyn, Brooklyn Heights, Seven Hills and North Royalton and beyond. In the area of sustainability, UH Parma Medical Center has had a long tradition of engaging its employees and community members through various wellness programs focusing on nutrition and physical fitness and of recycling and reusing valuable resources at the hospital.

Parma Earth Day Plant Sale

In 2014, the newly formed Sustainability Committee at UH Parma Medical Center supported Healthier Hospital Initiatives along with its peers and aligned its suppliers to provide data for the system sustainability metrics dashboard. The food services department continued its practice of encouraging employee wellness through its “Wellness Meals” program, including a quarterly drawing for a complimentary membership to UH Parma Medical Center’s Well-Fit Center for those who participated, and hosted the hospital’s annual Earth Day Celebration. Nutrition initiatives that coincided with system sustainability goals included increasing nonmeat protein meal offerings, providing antibiotic- and hormone-free selections, and increasing purchases from local vendors. Community and employee engagement programs included a Farmers’ Market with local vendors and free blood pressure screenings, around 30 Summer Walks hosted by the hospital in James Day Park that drew 20 – 30 participants, and a concerted effort to make the Well-Fit Center more accessible through reduced membership costs and additional classes.

Recycling program successes included recycling over 12 tons of glass, plastic, cans and cardboard, and 1,300 pounds of grease. Additionally, the medical center participated in a reusable sharps container program, avoiding the disposal of 16,000 containers and increased its medical device reprocessing, resulting in significant savings in 2014.
