Healthy Indoor Air

Healthy Indoor Air

UH has ensured that all facilities are mercury-free or have mercury elimination plans in place. We prioritized in 2013 the tracking of purchases of cleaning chemicals, medical product lines containing the plastic PVC and phthalate plasticizer DEHP, and furnishings containing other chemicals of concern.

In order to collect the appropriate data from our suppliers, we used the parameters of the Green Cleaning, DEHP/PVC Reduction and Healthy Interiors outcome areas of the Healthier Hospitals Initiative Safer Chemicals Challenge to create simple templates for use as raw data to create reports in our internal tracking dashboard. Thanks to the diligence of our Supply Chain partners, we were able to make significant progress in collecting a baseline in all three outcome areas in 2013. This kind of rigorous data collection is novel in the health care marketplace, and UH has been recognized as a national leader in effective implementation of this HHI challenge area.
