Health care is in the midst of turbulent transformation. At University Hospitals, we believe upheaval creates new opportunities for those of us who are prepared – those who innovate and consciously broaden their perspectives.

This is why we have committed to sustainability as a high-priority consideration in every business decision. We embrace our responsibility and influence as a major civic institution to elevate our region’s health and quality of life. Smart, sustainable business strategies and practices improve our operating efficiency and make good business sense and help us improve our community – socially, economically and environmentally.

In 2013, UH achieved “triple bottom line” successes by advancing our strategic sustainability priorities under four pillars of wellness:

Building Well
Our design, construction and renovation strategies and practices aim to create environmentally friendly spaces that also promote the health of our patients and employees.

Operating Well
We consciously and deliberately identify and implement ways to minimize waste, consume less energy, use fewer and safer chemicals, and conserve water. These practices enhance our operating efficiency and promote the health, comfort and safety of those inside our facilities and the people who live near them.

Buying Well
When we purchase goods and services, we select healthy and safe products, reduce toxicity and waste, minimize the use of nonrenewable resources, and support our local and regional economy.

Living Well
For our patients, employees and community, we promote personal and ecological wellness. We provide healthy foods that are locally and sustainably produced, promote healthier transportation options and educational resources for green living, and support sustainability initiatives in our communities.

This Progress Report on Sustainability outlines our great strides in 2013 toward environmental, organizational and human wellness, here in our Northeast Ohio community and beyond. Our sustainability efforts reflect our commitment to our community and our mission:
To Heal. To Teach. To Discover.

Sincerely,

Thomas F. Zenty III
