UH Geauga Medical Center launched innovative sustainability initiatives in 2013. For example, UH developed a Sustainability Certification Program to provide managers with an overview of sustainability and how it impacts healthcare. UH Geauga Medical Center was selected as the pilot for this program and was the first UH medical center to offer the class to its management team. The projects resulting from this program included efforts toward paper reduction, pharmaceutical waste reduction, employee health and wellness, healthier work place environments, and community education. Multidisciplinary project teams were formed and presented their projects to a panel of leaders who assessed each project’s quality, including sustainability impact.

Several significant accomplishments in sustainability resulted from this training program. For instance, representatives from UH Geauga reduced bottled water consumption by 34% and achieved over 10% reduction in red bag waste utilization. Further, staff at UH Geauga implemented a blue wrap (OR) recycling program in April of 2013 and also promoted their sustainability efforts to the public through Family Health & Safety Day, Middlefield Farmers Market, Geauga Growth Partnerships, and publication of an article in the News Herald.

The winning team from the Sustainability Certification Program in 2013 was the pharmaceutical waste reduction group who worked with oncologists to develop a dose rounding protocol with chemotherapy treatments. This protocol lessened chemotherapy waste and reduced the cost of treatment. The chemotherapy dose rounding project has been recognized nationally as a best practice.
