Prentiss OR Green Team - UH Case Medical Center

University Hospitals Case Medical Center, our 1,032-bed tertiary medical center, made strides in waste reduction and recycling in 2013. UH Case Medical Center implemented the Operating Room Recycling Program in October of 2013 in order to reduce the total amount of OR plastic waste that is landfilled. Not only does this successful program result in landfill diversion, but it also creates employment opportunities for the community: UHCMC partnered with Buckeye Industries, a local organization that employs developmentally disabled individuals in the Northeast Ohio community, to sort recyclable materials and bundle them to be used as raw materials for recycled-content goods.

As part of the program, staff at UH Case Medical Center added a silver-gray bag (for blue wrap and other medical plastics) to their ever-growing list of color-coded waste containers. Before this program, UH Case Medical Center was capturing 350 to 700 pounds of medical plastic waste. However, since its inception, the Operating Room Recycling Program has diverted more than 12 tons of material from municipal solid waste or regulated medical waste streams.
