New agreement adds UH Cleveland Medical Center, Rainbow Babies & Children’s, Seidman Cancer Center and Bedford Medical Center

CLEVELAND – University Hospitals (UH) and Medical Mutual of Ohio are expanding access to high-quality healthcare in Northeast Ohio by announcing that for the first time in more than 20 years all UH facilities and providers will be in the Medical Mutual SuperMed network.

This notable agreement reached between the two organizations means the following UH facilities will be added to the Medical Mutual SuperMed network for employer groups and individuals, as well as Medical Mutual’s Medicare Advantage network, effective Oct. 1, 2017:

“This is a great day for our members,” said Medical Mutual Chairman, President and CEO Rick Chiricosta. “The inclusion of UH Cleveland Medical Center and the UH Bedford Medical Center means Medical Mutual members can now utilize the full spectrum of services offered by one of the leading health systems in the country.”

Medical Mutual members already have access to UH doctors and other facilities across the UH system. The addition of UH Cleveland Medical Center facilities and UH Bedford Medical Center ensures they can now receive continuity of care across the entire UH range of services, including highly specialized treatments, such as proton therapy, the child and adolescent cancer program, and cystic fibrosis program offered at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital and UH Seidman Cancer Center. Procedures performed at UH facilities will be covered for Medical Mutual members at their highest benefit levels.

“We are pleased to offer complete access for Medical Mutual members to the quality services and specialties available across all UH facilities,” said Thomas F. Zenty, III, CEO of UH. “For more than 150 years, the people of Northeast Ohio have turned to UH for compassionate and quality care. Beginning Oct. 1, the many patients covered by Medical Mutual will be able to seek that care in all of the hospitals and health care facilities in our system including our flagship academic medical center and UH Bedford Medical Center.”

In Northeast Ohio, UH now participates in all major health insurance plans and the Medical Mutual SuperMed network now has all major health systems represented. This means greater choice of health services for employer groups and individuals and families alike.

“Market conditions were right to allow our organizations to come to an agreement that’s in the best interest of our mutual members and patients,” said Chiricosta.

Zenty added, “Both University Hospitals and Medical Mutual are pleased to have reached this momentous agreement. We look forward to welcoming and serving Medical Mutual members at all of our facilities.”
