University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center Receives Three-Year Accreditation from Commission on Cancer

Monday, August 29, 2016

ELYRIA, OH – The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) has granted Three-Year Accreditation to the cancer program at University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center. A facility receives a Three-Year Accreditation following the on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor.

Receiving care at a CoC-accredited cancer program ensures that a patient will have access to:

  • Comprehensive care, including a range of state-of-the art services and equipment
  • A multi-specialty team approach to coordinate the best treatment options
  • Information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options
  • Access to cancer-related information, education and support
  • A cancer registry that collects data on type and stage of cancers and treatment results and offers lifelong patient follow-up
  • Ongoing monitoring and improvement of care
  • Quality care close to home

As UH Elyria Medical Center’s Cancer Liaison Physician for the CoC, Ravi Chari, MD, FACS, is proud we have once again received this accreditation. “This designation reflects our ongoing dedication to extending expertise, compassion, and to provide excellent cancer care to people in our community,” said Dr. Chari. “UH Elyria has maintained cancer program accreditation since 1983.”

Established in 1922 by the American College of Surgeons, the CoC is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving patient outcomes and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education and the monitoring of comprehensive, quality care. The CoC’s accreditation program encourages hospitals, treatment centers and other facilities to improve their quality of patient care through various cancer-related services. There are currently more than 1,500 CoC-accredited cancer programs in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, representing 30 percent of all hospitals. CoC-accredited facilities diagnose and/or treat more than 70 percent of all newly diagnosed cancer patients each year.
