University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center Honored with Mission: Lifeline Achievement Award

Friday, June 10, 2016

ELYRIA, OH – University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center has received the Mission: Lifeline® Gold Receiving Quality Achievement Award. The hospital has implemented specific quality improvement measures outlined by the American Heart Association for treatment of patients who suffer severe heart attacks.

Every year, more than 250,000 people experience an ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) – the most deadly type of heart attack. Caused by a blockage of blood flow to the heart that requires timely treatment, STEMI attacks must be treated by opening the blocked vessel mechanically or by providing clot-busting medication.

The American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline program’s goal is to reduce system barriers to prompt treatment for heart attacks, beginning with the 9-1-1 call and continuing through hospital treatment. UH Elyria Medical Center is recognized for having an 85 percent composite adherence and at least 24 consecutive months of 75 percent or higher compliance on all Mission: Lifeline STEMI Receiving Center quality measures to improve the quality of care of STEMI patients.

In addition to receiving the Mission: Lifeline Gold Receiving Award, UH Elyria Medical Center has also been recognized as a recipient of Mission Lifeline’s Gold-Plus Award. This signifies that the hospital has not only reached an achievement score of 75 percent or greater on all Mission: Lifeline Receiving Center Quality Measures, but also for attaining at least a 75 percent achievement on First Door to Device time (also known as “Door-to-Balloon” time) of under 120 minutes for STEMI transfer patients from other facilities.

“UH Elyria Medical Center is dedicated to improving the quality of care for our patients who suffer heart attacks, and the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline program is helping us accomplish that goal through nationally respected guidelines,” said Don Schiffbauer, Director of Clinical Operations for UH Elyria Medical Center. “At UH Elyria, we have become extremely adept at providing this life-saving treatment – our Door-to-Balloon time averages just 45 minutes.” He continued, “This statistic represents a time that outperforms 90 percent of hospitals who report their data in the ACTION registry. We are proud to be able to provide this level of care to the people in our community.”
