Portage Medical Center Foundation Awards Student Scholarships

Ravenna, Ohio – The Portage Medical Center Foundation recently awarded seven scholarships from donor-directed funds to children of UH Portage Medical Center and affiliated healthcare site employees. Five $1,000 scholarships from the Dr. Peter Chen Medical Staff Scholarship Fund and two $1,000 scholarships from the Dr. Steve and Patti Dean Scholarship Fund were awarded.

This year’s scholarship recipients were selected by a committee comprised of members from the Portage County Retired Teachers Association.

The Peter F. Chen, M.D. Medical Staff Scholarship Fund was established by Dr. Chen to provide scholarships to graduating high school students who are legal dependents of UH Portage Medical Center and affiliated healthcare sites, in recognition of contributions employees make in caring for patients.

Recipients of the Dr. Peter Chen Medical Staff Scholarships are Alexis Moneypenny, Rachel Palmer, Alexandria Skowronski, Sydney Smith, and Brent Sodeman.

Alexis Moneypenny, of Rootstown, is a 2016 graduate of the Bio-Med Science Academy and plans to study biology at Kent State University. She is the daughter of Amanda Moneypenny, supply chain supervisor at UH Portage Medical Center.

Rachel Palmer, of Kent, is a 2016 graduate of Theodore Roosevelt High School and plans to attend American University to study international relations. She is the daughter of Mavis Palmer, cardiopulmonary patient educator at UH Portage Medical Center.

Alexandria Skowronski, of Aurora, is a 2016 graduate of Walsh Jesuit High School and plans to study marine biology and photojournalism at Ohio University. She is the daughter of Annamarie D’Orazio-Skowronski, nurse practioner with Ulrich Professional Group.

Sydney Smith, of Sebring, is a 2016 graduate of Sebring McKinley High School and plans to study biology at Marietta College. She is the daughter of Robi Smith, hospice case manager with UH Home Care and Hospice.

Brent Sodeman, of Atwater, is a 2016 graduate of Ravenna High School and plans to attend Youngstown State University to study psychology. He is the son of Kimberly Sodeman, MRI radiologic technologist at UH Portage Medical Center.

The Dr. Steve and Patti Dean Scholarship Fund was established in 2008 to provide scholarships for legal dependents of employees of UH Portage Medical Center and affiliated healthcare sites who are current students at Kent State University.

Receiving the Dr. Steve and Patti Dean Scholarship this year were Isabella Scarl and Lindsey West.

Isabella Scarl is the daughter of Carol Scarl, registered nurse at UH Portage Medical Center, and is pursuing a nursing degree at Kent State University.

Lindsey West is studying nutrition at Kent State University and is the daughter of Roxanna West, administrative nursing supervisor at UH Portage Medical Center.
