Lorain County resident Karen Mole and the Hampson Family Foundation are longtime benefactors of the hospital
ELYRIA: The Hampson Family Foundation and Karen Mole have donated $10.6 million to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center. The largest gift in the hospital’s 107-year history will support various wellness initiatives for the community served by UH Elyria Medical Center.
In recognition of this significant gift, UH will name UH Elyria Medical Center’s main pavilion, the “Hampson Mole Pavilion.” A dedication ceremony will take place in April 2016.
“In today’s new era of health care, UH is increasingly reaching out to our community to address root causes of poor health together,” said Thomas F. Zenty, III, CEO of University Hospitals. “We’re collaborating around innovative ways to keep people healthier and help patients manage complex diseases at home. Philanthropy holds great power to catalyze new healthy-community approaches, and Karen Mole and the Hampson Family Foundation have set an example for the entire nation.”
The generous donation will support the development and expansion of programs to address the most pressing health care needs of Lorain County residents, as determined through the hospital’s recent Community Health Needs Assessment. To be called the Hampson Mole Community Health Project, the funds will support programs aimed at addressing health care issues such as obesity, heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes.
Additionally, the Elyria Medical Center Foundation is providing $1.5 million to support the Hampson Mole Community Health Project.
Karen Mole, President of the Hampson Family Foundation, said as a longtime Lorain County resident she was proud and excited about the gift to the hospital. “I was born in this hospital and it has special meaning for me and my family,” said Ms. Mole. "Because of the quality and outstanding patient-centered care provided by Elyria Medical Center’s doctors, nurses and staff, the trustees of the Hampson Family Foundation and I are so pleased to support and promote health in our area through the UH Elyria Medical Center."
Karen Mole and the Hampson Family Foundation have very close ties with UH Elyria Medical Center and a long tradition of giving back to the hospital as well as the community. Karen and her family have all been patients of UH Elyria Medical Center and her late parents, Lois, and Bert, and husband, Jim, were all treated for cancer at the hospital. The Hampsons were owners and operators of Hampson Enterprises in Elyria.
They have supported a variety of projects at UH Elyria Medical Center, including a six-figure gift in October 2015 to help establish the Hampson-Mole Breast Health Suite. Fully funded by the Hampson Family Foundation along with the Elyria Medical Center Foundation, the new suite provides patients with screenings, biopsies and other services in a section of the hospital that is dedicated to them and their needs.
"We are grateful for the support of both the Hampson Family Foundation and Karen Mole," said Charlotte Wray, President of UH Elyria Medical Center. "Their generosity demonstrates their passion for health care and their commitment to our community. The Hampson Mole Pavilion will be an important part of the UH Elyria Medical Center campus for years to come.”
The Hampson Mole Community Health Project will support various health screenings. It will also fund a patient navigator to help ensure that community members receive appropriate follow-up care including additional testing, treatment and education to manage their conditions. The innovative project will be expanded throughout the UH health system and potentially will serve as a national model for improving preventative care and early detection of a variety of diseases.
“Over the past 10 years the Hampson Family Foundation has strived to give back to our community - Lorain County. I care deeply for the people of this community and feel this endeavor will help provide quality care and a personalized experience where it matters most - close to home,” said Ms. Mole. “For my trustees and me to be a part of the development of this unique community programming is very special. Our hope and goal with this gift are to inspire others to support University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center and the Elyria Medical Center Foundation.”
This gift is among the largest gifts since UH announced plans in December 2012 to continue its $1 billion Discover the Difference Campaign and pursue an expanded goal of $1.5 billion. The campaign – one of the largest in the history of Northeast Ohio – has received unprecedented support, including gifts from more than 71,000 individuals, foundations and corporations. To date, donors have contributed more than $1.388 billion in support of the mission that has guided UH for 150 years, making a profound and enduring impact in the lives of patients and families today and for generations to come.
