UH Portage Medical Center Announces Certified Healthcare Environmental Services Technicians

Friday, May 1, 2015

Ravenna, Ohio – Six members of the UH Portage Medical Center Environmental Services team have achieved national certification as Certified Healthcare Environmental Services Technicians (CHEST). They are the first frontline technicians in the state of Ohio to complete the Association for the Healthcare Environment’s (AHE) CHEST training and certification program, which requires twenty-four hours of classroom instruction and a comprehensive final exam.

“We are so proud of our environmental services’ staff for their commitment to improving care for our patients,” said Jeanne Fisher, Manager, Environmental Services at UH Portage Medical Center, who led the training as one of only two certified trainers for CHEST in the state of Ohio. “Each of our newly Certified Healthcare Environmental Services Technicians dedicated significant time and effort to learning the content. That hard work advances their job performance and satisfaction and also benefits our entire UH Portage family – from care providers to patients.”

The CHEST curriculum, launched in late 2015, seeks to improve the overall quality of environmental services frontline staff by increasing knowledge and enhancing skills in seven main areas: cleaning and disinfection, waste handling, floor care, linen handling, infection prevention, safety, and communication. The certification program was developed to ensure that environmental services staff are able to contribute to the value-based healthcare environment by reducing training costs while also reducing on the job errors.

“Environmental services technicians have a great impact on the experience of patients in any health care setting. They are key to infection prevention and also regularly interact with patients, families, and medical staff. It is vital that they are equipped to do everything in their power to contribute to patient safety and enhance the patient experience,” said M. Steven Jones, President, UH Portage Medical Center.

The AHE of the American Hospital Association is an organization for professionals responsible for caring for the patient and resident care environment across all care settings including hospitals, long term care, continuing care retirement communities and ambulatory care.
