Nurse Recognized as an Outstanding International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant

Tuesday, March 17, 2015

ELYRIA, OH – Tina Schulin, RNC-MMN, BSN, IBCLC, LCCE, CKC, a nurse in the Family Birth Center at University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center, has been recognized by the Ohio Lactation Consultant Association (OLCA) as an Outstanding International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that mothers should breastfeed their babies for at least the first year of life and continue until they are both ready to stop, noting that breast milk should be used exclusively in the first six months of life. International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants are health care professionals who specialize in the clinical management of breastfeeding. Ms. Schulin works with both inpatient and outpatient mothers to educate them on the benefits of breastfeeding, and assists them with establishing and sustaining breastfeeding.

Ms. Schulin is passionate about breastfeeding and devotes countless hours to help further the practice. In addition to her work with patients, she also leads a breastfeeding support group; teaches classes at two hospitals; is a guest lecturer at Lorain County Community College; created the Lorain County Virtual Breastfeeding Support Group on Facebook; is co-founder of the Lorain County Breastfeeding Coalition; and was instrumental in initiating the “Milk Run 5K,” which raises funds for the Mother’s Milk Bank of Ohio. Additionally, she mentors IBCLC candidates. To date, she has successfully added six IBCLC’s to Ohio’s lactation consultant population and is currently working with another.

According to Lisa S. Davidson, IBCLC and president of the OLCA, “All of these things support OLCA’s mission of transforming society into a breastfeeding culture.” She continued, “Empowering, supporting and educating our membership and enabling them to be articulate agents for change – Tina embodies this. She is extremely helpful to mothers, babies and her fellow breastfeeding advocates.”
