Holiday donation proceeds will purchase lifesaving ventilator for Critical Care patients

Ashtabula County – Last holiday season, community members contributed more than $7,000 to the annual Community Christmas Card fund to help enhance the excellent quality of care provided in the Critical Care Unit at University Hospitals (UH) Geneva Medical Center. The proceeds purchased a state-of-the-art ultrasound machine used in treating acute cardiovascular patients at the hospital.

Each year since 1972, contributions to the Community Christmas Card Fund have helped purchase a piece of life-saving medical technology UH Geneva Medical Center has needed. Nearly $280,000 has been donated over more than four decades to acquire equipment ranging from defibrillators, EKG monitors and stress testing machines to ventilators, electrocardiographs and a medication infusion system.

Plans call for the funds raised from this coming season’s campaign to buy a new, advanced ventilation system that enables critical care patients with pulmonary and respiratory conditions to breathe without using an invasive artificial airway like an endotracheal or tracheostomy tube.

“Because every breath matters and every breath is different, patients need a ventilator that always follows their breathing pattern,” says Amitabh Goel, MD, FACS, Director of Critical Care, UH Geneva Medical Center. “The new ventilator will be a tremendous life-saving addition to our Critical Care Unit that will enable us to continue our tradition of high-quality critical care to our community.”

Contributions are accepted at UH Geneva Medical Center and at banks throughout Geneva and Austinburg Township. The names of each contributor is listed in the Community Christmas Card, a colorful full-page greeting published in the Star Beacon on Christmas Eve. "Each year, hundreds of individuals, families, organization and businesses send holiday greetings by adding their names to the Community Christmas Card with their contribution. Anyone can help our community hospital’s critically ill patients, whether it’s with $1 or $100,” says Jan Perala, a longtime Community Christmas Card Committee member. “Every dollar counts and helps to save lives."

“The success of the Community Christmas Card Fund is due to the people we serve giving their hard-earned money from the heart,” says Dr. Goel. “We are grateful that this tradition of devoted generosity will continue to touch the lives of the countless patients who come to the Critical Care Unit at UH Geneva Medical Center.”

Contributions will be accepted through Dec. 16. UH Geneva Medical Center is located at 870 West Main Street in Geneva.
