15th Annual Mocktail Mixer Madness

Local Agencies Compete with Mock Cocktails While Raising Funds for UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital Injury Prevention Center

Cleveland, OH—Fun drink names, festive displays and creative themes are all ways that participants in this year’s 15th annual Holiday Mocktail Party will remind guests about responsible partying and party hosting this holiday season. This battle of the bartenders, scheduled for Thursday, November 20 at the Cleveland Marriott East, is a fun and engaging way for guests to try out some delicious non-alcoholic cocktails – perfect for designated drivers and non drinkers at upcoming holiday parties.

Despite the public perception that kids killed in impaired driving crashes are usually the victims of irresponsible strangers, most children killed are riding with the impaired driver. To stress the need for people to think twice before getting behind the wheel after having a few drinks—particularly during the holiday season where adults are more likely to combine social drinking with family activities—the UH Rainbow Injury Prevention Center and the Greater Cleveland Safe Kids/Safe Communities Coalition host a Holiday Mocktail Party each year to highlight the dangers of impaired driving, stress the need for designated drivers, and provide fun and creative options for celebrating without alcohol.

Thirteen community partner agencies will mix, blend, shake and stir their mocktails for judges and nearly 500 guests in the hopes of taking home the “Best Mock Cocktail” or “Crowd Pleaser” title, along with a year’s worth of bragging rights. This year’s participants include Brooklyn Heights Police Department, Maple Heights Police Department, Cleveland Metroparks Ranger Department, Bellfaire JCB SAY, Euclid Police Department, Warrensville Heights Police Department, Berea Police Department, Walton Hills Police Department, Lake County Task Force on Crime Prevention, UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital – Pediatric Trauma Department, Parma Heights Police Department, Ohio State Highway Patrol and Ohio Department of Transportation, and Nationwide Insurance. Celebrity judges including State Representative Marlene Anielski, Wayne Dawson of FOX8, Average Joe from Q104, and Browns alumni Greg Pruitt, Al Jenkins, and Bill Duff will sample and score the creations.

“The message and mission of this event applies to everyone – plan ahead for a safe and sober way home,” explains Kathryn Wesolowski, Manager of the UH Rainbow Injury Prevention Center. The Rainbow Injury Prevention Center and Greater Cleveland Safe Kids/Safe Communities Coalition offer these additional tips for making smart choices if your holiday festivities will involve alcohol:

  • plan ahead
  • designate a driver
  • call a cab if you do not have a sober driver
  • stay at your home or a hotel if everyone in your group is going to be drinking
  • call a friend or family member for a safe ride home
