University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital and Safe Kids Greater Cleveland Join Local Students to Promote Safe Walking to School

Friday, October 3, 2014

More than 6,000 local children will participate in Walk to School Day Activities

UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, as lead agency for Safe Kids Greater Cleveland, will join Greater Cleveland children to walk to celebrate International Walk to School Week from October 6-10. More than 250,000 children nationally and over 6,000 locally will participate in the event that promotes safe walking skills.

Students at Sterling Morton Elementary in Mentor will walk through their neighborhood to school with parents, teachers, FedEx volunteers and members of Safe Kids Greater Cleveland on Wednesday, October 8 to observe International Walk to School Day. During their walk, they will be identifying common hazards and practicing safe pedestrian habits. Along with Sterling Morton, nineteen other schools in Greater Cleveland are celebrating International Walk to School Week by participating in their own Walk to School Day events.

International Walk to School Week allows parents, caregivers and volunteers to teach and model safe pedestrian behaviors. Instead of just discussing pedestrian safety in the classroom, students walk with adult role models, see proper behaviors in action, and receive the tools to be safer pedestrians.
