Evan C. Howe, MD, and Sam Ahuja, MD, offer shared care for moms-to-be throughout region

ASHTABULA COUNTY, OHIO – Jefferson-based Family Medicine physician Evan C. Howe, MD, and Ashtabula and Geneva-based OB/GYN specialist Sam Ahuja, MD, are collaborating to offer complete continuity of preconception, prenatal, obstetric and pediatric care for mothers-to-be and their children throughout the Ashtabula County region.

Dr. Howe, a native of the Village of Jefferson, returned to his home town in August and joined University Hospitals (UH) to offer primary care services to central and southern Ashtabula County families. At the same time, Dr. Ahuja, Medical Director of Gynecologic Services at UH Conneaut, Geneva and Geauga medical centers, expanded the accessibility of his OB/GYN services in the county.

“Dr. Howe and I recognized an opportunity to work together to provide comprehensive pre- and post-delivery care in a region where there has been a lack of obstetric services close to home,” says Dr. Ahuja, a board-certified and fellowship-trained University Hospitals OB/GYN. “Together we are filling a clinical need for women in the area served by UH Conneaut, Geneva and Geauga medical centers.”

A patient in or east of the Jefferson area would first consult with Dr. Howe for regular prenatal care. During her first trimester, she would see Dr. Ahuja twice – once for a consultation, once for an ultrasound at 10 to 12 weeks. Dr. Ahuja then oversees delivery at UH Geauga Medical Center in Chardon. Dr. Howe “bookends” the shared care by being accessible to oversee the infant’s and mother’s health and wellness from that point forward.

“My involvement often begins before pregnancy with preconception discussions to ensure a mom-to-be is in the best health to support a pregnancy,” says Dr. Howe, whose Family Medicine board-certification includes training in prenatal and obstetric care. “I am in constant communication with Dr. Ahuja about each of our shared patients, and I’m the main point of contact for office visits and screenings throughout the pregnancy.”

In Jefferson, Dr. Howe offers his prenatal and post-delivery services at Jefferson Primary Care, 38 Dorset Road. Dr. Ahuja provides his obstetrics services in Ashtabula at 2709 Lake Avenue and at the Geneva Medical Office Building on the UH Geneva Medical Center campus, 890 West Main Street, Suite 102. UH Geauga Medical Center, which achieves consistently outstanding national ratings for obstetrics care quality and patient experience, is located at 13207 Ravenna Road in Chardon.

The physicians’ dedicated collaboration is unique in this region. “Our teamwork gives my patients easy access to an expert with two decades of experience in the OB field,” says Dr. Howe.

“Collaborating with Dr. Howe means that women in every part of Ashtabula County now have easy access to outstanding care from University Hospitals physicians and facilities throughout their entire journey as a mother-to-be and new mom,” says Dr. Ahuja.
