Bariatric Center recognized nationally as a Center of Excellence

Friday, May 2, 2014

More than 1,100 bariatric surgeries have been performed at University Hospitals Parma Medical Center since the opening of its program, which was recently reaccredited as a Center of Excellence by the national accreditation body that oversees bariatric programs across the country.

The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and American College of Surgeons (ACS) have given the bariatric program at UH Parma Medical Center full accreditation in the new, unified Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP). This designation is reserved for bariatric surgery programs that have demonstrated a history of successful patient outcomes.

Patients of UH Parma Medical Center’s comprehensive program have collectively lost more than 110,000 pounds since it was established a decade ago. A dietitian and nurse counsel patients through regular meetings in preparation for this life-changing surgery, and a support group contributes to their long-term success. Bariatric surgery procedures not only improve mortality rates by reducing the effects of obesity, but they resolve or decrease underlying comorbidities such as diabetes and heart disease.

“This accreditation formally acknowledges your commitment to providing quality improvement and patient safety for bariatric surgery patients,” stated David Provost, MD, FASMBS, chairman of the Bariatric Surgery Review Committee at the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), in a letter announcing the reaccreditation. “As an accredited program you have demonstrated that your center meets the needs of bariatric surgery patients by providing multidisciplinary, high-quality, patient-centered care.”

The ASMBS and the American College of Surgeons unified their accreditation programs in 2012 to form the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program. The program accredits inpatient and outpatient bariatric surgery centers in the United States and Canada that have undergone an independent, voluntary, and rigorous peer evaluation in accordance with nationally recognized bariatric surgical standards.

"Achieving Center of Excellence status for the third time is a result of the hard work and dedication to providing quality care at UH Parma Medical Center,” said Bariatric Center Medical Director Michael Nowak, MD, FACS.
