Breast cancer “FUNdraising” campaign leading up to event invites community to decorate bras to benefit hospital’s UH Seidman Cancer Center

GEAUGA COUNTY—The third annual University Hospitals (UH) Geauga Medical Center Bras For a Cause Tea Luncheon will take place Saturday, May 17 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the Community Room of the Notre Dame Cathedral Latin Motherhouse, 13000 Auburn Road in Chardon. The cancer awareness and “FUNdraising” event is presented by the UH Geauga Medical Center Auxiliary.

In the weeks leading up to the May 17 luncheon, the Auxiliary will present its Bras For a Cause “Decorate a Bra Contest” to raise money for the hospital’s cancer programs; instill hope and support; and promote a sense of fun for the Geauga County community.

“Any individual, group, school or business can decorate and submit a size 34C bra with a theme that is classy, sassy, funky, fabulous or a heartfelt tribute to someone who has battled breast cancer,” says Karen Cico, Volunteer Services Coordinator, UH Geauga Medical Center. “Last year, 22 dazzling bras were entered from all around the community.”

“Decorate a Bra Contest” entries must be submitted to the Auxiliary by Friday, May 2. Bras will be displayed and voted on at UH Geauga Medical Center from May 5 – 16, and at the tea luncheon on May 17. Voting tickets can be purchased for $1 each or six for $5. The four top vote-getting bras will be announced at the luncheon.

The entry that received the most votes in last year’s competition – a bra named “Arrested Development,” submitted by the employees of Chardon Municipal Court Judge Terri L. Stupica – raised more than $600. The Auxiliary’s Bras For a Cause campaign raised a total of over $3,400 in 2013, more than double the previous year’s proceeds.

“The contest and luncheon offer women a chance to join together in activities centered on education, support and fun,” says Mary Brazofsky, President, UH Geauga Medical Center Auxiliary.

One hundred percent of the money raised will benefit the University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center facility at UH Geauga Medical Center. “In addition to submitting bra entries, we encourage area businesses and organizations to be involved by choosing their favorite decorated bra and matching the amount raised by the community’s votes,” says Cico. “Last year, Judge Stupica matched the winning bra’s dollar amount in the spirit of teamwork and making a difference, for this cause and UH Geauga Medical Center’s cancer patients.”

In addition to the announced winners, the May 17 event will feature a fully catered lunch, bakery prepared by the Auxiliary and a silent auction. Prizes include a pink leather jacket, matching purse and wallet; and a spa day for two. Guest speakers and clinical experts from UH Geauga Medical Center will provide updates on the hospital’s cancer care services and offer messages of hope about breast cancer.

Tickets to attend the UH Geauga Medical Center Bras For a Cause Tea Luncheon are $10. Space is limited. Doors open at 10:30 a.m. on May 17 and lunch will be served at noon.
