National award recognizes hospital for maintaining top five percent performance

Ashtabula County – University Hospitals (UH) Geneva Medical Center was named a 2013 Guardian of Excellence AwardSM winner by Press Ganey Associates, Inc. on November 19. Press Ganey is the health care industry’s leader in measuring, understanding and improving the patient experience at more than 10,000 health care facilities including over half of all the hospitals in the United States.

The Guardian of Excellence Award honors top-performing facilities that consistently achieved a top five percent performance. Based on data collected from the latest evaluation year – May 2012-April 2013 – UH Geneva Medical Center was recognized by Press Ganey for reaching and continuously performing in the 95th percentile in the category of Ambulatory Surgery Patient Satisfaction. “Our ambulatory surgery team relentlessly pursues excellence in patient satisfaction and clinical quality year after year,” says Amitabh Goel, MD, FACS, Chief Medical Officer, UH Geneva Medical Center.

The hospital’s Ambulatory Surgery Department offers a full range of advanced services that encompasses minimally invasive abdominal and general surgery including breast and hernia surgery, gynecological and orthopedic procedures; podiatric, cardiology, ENT and pain management procedures; and endoscopy including screening colonoscopy and bronchoscopy. The Press Ganey award reflects a superior evaluation of the patient’s entire perioperative experience from pre-admission testing, education and preparation; to transport to the operating room; to care in the hospital’s post-anesthesia care unit (PACU); to discharge.

“Our major focus is on patient safety,” says Tracy Waller, RN, CNOR, Perioperative Services Manager, UH Geneva Medical Center. “We are part of one of the largest health systems in Ohio, but we are still able to offer our patients a small-town experience along with state-of-the-art care. The Press Ganey recognition reflects this. Our patients are not just numbers to us; they become part of our family. We laugh together, we celebrate together and we give comfort and compassion to our patients no matter what their health care situation is.”

The Press Ganey Guardian of Excellence Award is a health care industry symbol of achievement. UH Geneva Medical Center is one of fewer than five percent of all Press Ganey partner facilities that reached the 95th percentile threshold throughout the one-year reporting period. “All of our nurses put the patient’s and family’s needs at the center of everything they do and that creates a bond that is visible,” says Karen McNeil, BSN, RN, Chief Nursing Officer, UH Conneaut and Geneva medical centers.
