UH orthopaedic residents help distribute shoes and socks to less fortunate for the holidays

CLEVELAND, OHIO – On the Tuesday evening before Thanksgiving, University Hospitals orthopaedic specialists will embrace the giving spirit of the holiday season by offering dozens of less-fortunate individuals in Northeast Ohio free foot exams and helping to provide them with new socks and shoes.

On November 26, John E. Feighan, MD, fellowship-trained foot and ankle specialist at UH Geauga Medical Center, and as many as six chief residents from the University Hospitals orthopaedic program will visit 2100 Lakeside Emergency Men’s Shelter in Cleveland. There they will examine the feet of 75 to 100 homeless men who live at the shelter.

“We will perform screening assessments to make sure no one has active infections or ulcers on their feet,” says Dr. Feighan, who also practices as an orthopaedic surgeon at UH Geauga Medical Center. “If we see any acute problems, we’ll recommend a follow-up exam.”

Following the foot assessments, Dr. Feighan and his orthopaedic colleagues will work with the shelter’s staff to distribute new shoes and socks delivered by two partnering nonprofits: Soles4Souls, a global institution dedicated to fighting the devastating impact of poverty by collecting new and used shoes and clothing; and Our Hearts to Your Soles, a Pittsburgh-based organization that coordinates shoe donations and free foot exams for less fortunate people across the United States.

“As orthopaedic and foot and ankle physicians, we believe as Our Hearts to Your Soles does that proper foot health is important to an overall health maintenance program,” says Dr. Feighan. “Our UH team began participating in this annual outreach event in 2007 when Our Hearts to Your Soles expanded it to include foot and ankle physicians around the country. Both organizations and 2100 Lakeside provide good will and a very nice Thanksgiving to the men who live at the shelter. When they’re able to put on a pair of dry socks and boots at this time of year, it really does bolster their spirits.”
