CLEVELAND -- University Hospitals (UH) has appointed Catherine S. Koppelman, RN, MSN, UH Chief Nursing Officer, as UH Patient Experience Officer.

In this newly created role, Ms. Koppelman will direct the Patient Experience Center that will build upon UH’s expertise in patient-centered care. She will coordinate system-wide initiatives aimed at ensuring patients are satisfied with the care and services they receive.

“University Hospitals is nationally known for our culture of compassionate, patient-centered care, and we have always made patient satisfaction a professional priority and a point of pride,” said Thomas F. She has proved herself as a highly respected, patient-focused leader who has been instrumental to our nationally renowned quality-improvement successes.”

Ms. Koppelman joined UH in 2007 as Chief Nursing Officer at UH Case Medical Center and then became the system’s Chief Nursing Officer two years later. She will retain both of those positions.

The new Patient Experience Center will be within the UH Institute for Health Care Quality and Innovation. Ms. Koppelman said UH will adapt principles and practices driving the system’s continuous improvements in quality and safety to make similar improvements in patient experience. “These include data-based, patient-focused metrics and a continuing commitment to research and education,” she said. “We also are expanding the role of active patient and family advisory councils to get more feedback from the people that we serve.”

Ms. Koppelman holds a nursing diploma from St. Vincent Charity Hospital, a bachelor of science degree in nursing from Cleveland State University and a master of science degree in nursing from Duke University. She completed the Johnson and Johnson Nurse Executive Fellowship Program at the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania.
