Ranking is based on quality measures for heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care

GEAUGA COUNTY– University Hospitals (UH) Geauga Medical Center was recently named Top Performer on Key Quality Measures® for 2013 by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of health care organizations in America. The full-service hospital was recognized on October 18 by The Joint Commission for exemplary performance in using evidence-based clinical processes shown to improve care for a specific range of medical conditions.

A Joint Commission-accredited facility, UH Geauga Medical Center is one of 1,099 hospitals in the United States to earn the distinction of Top Performer on Key Quality Measures for attaining and sustaining excellence in accountability measure performance. The hospital was recognized for its achievement on the following measure sets: Heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care. The ratings are based on data reported to The Joint Commission during the 2012 calendar year. Each accountability measure represents an evidence-based practice – examples include giving aspirin at arrival for heart attack patients, giving antibiotics one hour before surgery or providing a home management plan of care for children with asthma.

“As a Top Performer hospital, UH Geauga Medical Center has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to quality improvement and its team should be proud of its achievement,” says Mark R. Chassin, MD, FACP, President and Chief Executive Officer, The Joint Commission. “The hospital’s quality performance directly contributes to better health outcomes for patients.”

“With health care reform placing an even greater emphasis on quality, we have made a commitment to accreditation because positive patient outcomes achieved through evidence-based processes demonstrate that we provide the highest quality care for our region,” says M. Steven Jones, President, UH Geauga Medical Center. “Being named a Joint Commission Top Performer on Key Quality Measures makes that commitment all the more exciting and important for each of us.”

With its Top Performer ranking, UH Geauga Medical Center will be included in the most recent release of The Joint Commission’s Improving America’s Hospitals annual report and recognized on The Joint Commission’s Quality Check website (www.qualitycheck.org). In addition to accreditation, UH Geauga Medical Center also holds Joint Commission certification in Hip and Knee Joint Replacement, and advanced certification as a Stroke Center.
