Physician offers minimally invasive general surgical and weight loss procedures

GEAUGA COUNTY – On September 1, board-eligible general and bariatric surgeon Igal Breitman, MD joined the surgical team at University Hospitals (UH) Geauga Medical Center. Dr. Breitman adds a wide range of minimally invasive expertise to the hospital’s general surgical capabilities and the Center for Bariatric Surgery.

Dr. Breitman’s diverse medical training includes a liver research fellowship at Tel Aviv University; and a clinical fellowship in bariatric and minimally invasive surgery at the University of Rochester Medical Center. He spent two years at Vanderbilt University in Nashville focusing on bariatric and metabolic research. “I spent almost a decade at the leading surgical institute in Israel and was involved in more than 3,000 cases,” says Dr. Breitman. “I came to the University of Rochester in 2008 where I did over 400 cases, most of them gastric bypass and also gastric banding, gastric sleeve and general surgery.”

Following his training in the United States, Dr. Breitman received several offers which included directing a bariatric program back home in Jerusalem. He and his family decided to stay in America. “I am very impressed with the people I’ve met in Northeast Ohio and at University Hospitals,” says Dr. Breitman, who is also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland. “I love the Cleveland area and decided this is the right place for my family. I’m excited to care for patients at UH Geauga Medical Center and to work with Dr. Leena Khaitan and the entire surgical team here.”

Dr. Breitman complements UH Geauga Medical Center’s comprehensive surgical capabilities with his experience in laparoscopic abdominal and weight loss surgery; surgical oncology; and trauma.

“We are very pleased to welcome Dr. Igal Breitman to our hospital’s surgical team,” says M. Steven Jones, President, UH Geauga Medical Center. “Dr. Breitman’s expertise in minimally invasive techniques in the general surgery and bariatric surgery arenas expands our abilities to serve our community’s residents even more completely.”
