University Hospitals opens new Fertility Center at UH Ahuja Medical Center

Wednesday, November 16, 2011

BEACHWOOD – University Hospitals (UH) has opened the UH Fertility Center at UH Ahuja Medical Center in Beachwood, OH, offering a full range of state-of-the-art services for the diagnosis and treatment of infertility. The new UH Fertility Center complements the maternal fetal medicine and extensive OB/GYN services already located in the 18,000-square-foot women’s health area on the Kathy Risman Pavilion’s third floor.

Directed by James M. Goldfarb, MD, a nationally renowned fertility expert, the UH Fertility Center will serve as the hub for fertility services throughout the health system. Leading-edge technology and services offered include in vitro fertilization (IVF), egg vitrification (freezing), pre-implantantion genetic diagnosis (PGD), reproductive surgery, and IVF and andrology laboratories.

“The UH Fertility Center provides the most advanced infertility therapies available to help patients realize their dreams of having a baby,” says Dr. Goldfarb. “Our new full-service center is equipped with the latest technology and offers comprehensive, individualized care in a welcoming, patient-friendly environment.”

Dr. Goldfarb has been a pioneer in the field of IVF for the last 30 years. His programs have been responsible for many “firsts” including Ohio’s first IVF birth (1983), the world’s first IVF surrogate birth (1986) and Ohio’s first birth from PGD (2004).

In addition to the UH Fertility Center, Dr. Goldfarb has brought the “Partnership for Families” program to University Hospitals. The unique philanthropic organization, co-founded in 2004 by Dr. Goldfarb and Nancy Lerner Fisher, provides grants to qualified couples or women who have unsuccessfully completed an IVF cycle and cannot afford a second attempt, or need PGD to decrease the chance of having a child with a genetic disease. The program also provides financial assistance for patients who need egg or embryo freezing before cancer therapy.

“Infertility is a psychologically devastating medical problem and can dash the hopes of couples trying to conceive a child. Fertility treatments can be very expensive and cost-prohibitive,” says Dr. Goldfarb. “I am proud to say that since 2004, Partnership for Families has helped give more than 150 women and couples the chance to have a family.”

University Hospitals will celebrate the opening of the Fertility Center at a private dedication event on Monday, Nov. 14, at 6 p.m. at the Kathy Risman Pavilion.

The UH Fertility Center is staffed by nationally recognized fertility specialists, including: Bryan Hecht, MD, William Hurd, MD; James Liu, MD; Barry Peskin, MD; and Brooke Rossi, MD. A satellite of the UH Fertility Center will remain at UH MacDonald Women’s Hospital in University Circle. Other fertility services are offered in Twinsburg and Westlake.
