Greening UH in the Operating Room

Efficient, well-run operating rooms heal people and planet.

Operating rooms are some of the most energy, water and material-intensive areas of any hospital. It is important for overall public health that our operating rooms not only produce optimal surgical results, but also operate efficiently and effectively.

System efforts in Greening the OR in 2016 included:

  • Single-use device reprocessing
  • Surgical kit reformulation
  • Medical plastics recycling
  • Reusable sharp containers
  • HVAC Setback programs to reduce energy-intensive air changes
Greening the OR

In addition to regularly reviewing contracts to seek opportunities for increased reprocessed device purchasing, we continue to work with external partners such as Practice Greenhealth to better understand barriers to reprocessing and have national conversations between peer health systems, GPOs and suppliers on how to increase reprocessed device purchasing over all.
