Planting Seeds for a Healthier Future: the Bedford Community Garden

Members of UH Bedford Medical Center have partnered with the community to improve the Bedford Community Garden, which is open to people from all walks of life and varying abilities. Such a partnership helps to create a thriving community network that leverages its wealth of assets to build economic, social and environmental well-being for all.

Imagine emerald green vines bursting with juicy red tomatoes, yard-long green beans, broccoli bouquets and bright yellow squash meandering through the garden. That is only part of the wonder Bedford Community Garden has to offer.

Boasting 42 plots, a small apple orchard and a few raised beds, this garden thrives on diversity.

Members range from families residing in the City of Bedford to members of UH Bedford Medical Center’s Age Well Be Well Club, UH Bedford Medical Center’s Diabetes Support Group, various community groups and students from Central Primary School. Not only do they plant healthy, fresh vegetables of their own, but they also conduct their monthly educational meetings at the garden, with the assistance of a master gardener who was trained through the Ohio State University Extension Master Gardener Program.

The garden has been awarded a grant from GardeningKnowHow.com to be used for more raised beds that will be built by local high school students as part of the “Space Maker” class. These taller beds will better serve our senior population, as well as the members of the Diabetes Support Group.
