Greening UH in our Workforce

Education and outreach efforts for our employees

A primary goal of our sustainability program is to empower our employees with resources to make informed decisions related to the environment and health in their daily work. To do that we continually develop way to educate and engage employees in the greening efforts UH undertakes. Below are a few examples of our educational efforts in 2016:

  • Recycle Champs Employee Education Class: This class, aimed to bolster our system recycling rate, is hosted by the System Waste Coordinator and was given at five facilities to over 170 people.
  • Eat Real Food Employee Photo contest: Over 150 employee photos submissions of healthy, locally grown food
  • Employee Energy Challenge: Beginning on Oct. 15 and going through March 31, the 2016-2017 Energy Challenge at University Hospitals asked employees to participate in a two phase program that promotes Energy Awareness Month (October) and beyond. Phase 1 of the challenge was an educational quiz that focused on energy consumption at home and at work. Over 1,000 UH employees across the system participated in Phase I of the Energy Challenge.
  • National Bike Challenge: The National Bike Challenge platform was used for a third year to increase bike riding as a mode of commuting and recreation amongst employees. 157 employees actively participated in this program that culminated in avoiding over 14.4 tons of CO2 emissions.
  • Slow Roll Community Bike Rides: A Community Bike Fair and five Employee Wellness / Community Bike Rides, led by Slow Roll Cleveland through the University Circle, Glenville, Hough and East Cleveland neighborhoods, were held throughout the summer of 2016, connecting people with places through people-powered mobility. Educational tents and introductory talks were held prior to each bike ride, reaching hundreds of individuals.
  • Dietetic Intern Didactic Sessions: UH Office of Sustainability led two educational sessions about our healthy and sustainable food programming for the 2016 group of UH dietetic interns.

Location feature: University Hospitals Conneaut and UH Geneva Medical Centers

UH Geneva Garden

UH Geneva and Conneaut medical centers engaged with the Boy Scouts of America to build small raised bed gardens for their hospitals. Herbs were planted in the raised beds and serve as an example of simple ways to grow healthy, local food that is good for the body and environment. UH Geneva and Conneaut medical centers also gave away tree saplings to employees and visitors during their April Earth Day celebrations in an effort to promote community beautification and healthy air.
