Northern Ohio’s Only Level I Pediatric Trauma Center
University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital Re-Verified as Level I Pediatric Trauma Center
UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital has received re-verification as a Level I pediatric trauma center from the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Committee on Trauma (COT). UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital has been a continuously verified Level I pediatric trauma center for more than two decades, and is the only designated Level I pediatric trauma center in northern Ohio.
“We are proud to once again be recognized as a Level I pediatric trauma center by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma,” said Mike Dingeldein, MD, Medical Director of the pediatric trauma center at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital.
A Level I pediatric trauma center offers the highest level of trauma care across the continuum from injury prevention through rehabilitation. At UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, board-certified trauma surgeons, supported by pediatric nurses and a pediatric emergency department team specially trained in the care of injured children, are all ready to respond 365 days a year.
Established by the ACS in 1987, the COT’s verification program promotes the development of trauma centers in which participants provide not only the hospital resources necessary to treat severe injuries, but also to provide an entire spectrum of care to address the needs of the patients and necessary psychological and social supports for relatives and siblings, all impacted by a profound trauma in the family.
In addition to support services, UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital’s Pediatric Trauma Center works closely with northern Ohio’s first responders and EMS professionals to be sure they are well-versed in special issues related to pediatric trauma, emergency and safe transport.
“In trauma, every moment counts and teamwork becomes especially important,” says Dr. Dingeldein. “Our talented team is prepared 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to care for severely injured babies, children and young adults.”
The Level I pediatric trauma center is located at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital on University Hospitals Case Medical Center’s main campus.
The Level I pediatric trauma center complements UH’s coordinated regional adult trauma network, which includes four existing Level III trauma centers at University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center, St. John Medical Center in Westlake, Southwest General Health Center in Middleburg Heights, and Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. UH Case Medical Center has applied for ACS verification as an adult Level I trauma center.
