13 Environmental Excellence awards
UH earned 13 Environmental Excellence awards from Practice Greenhealth, including the prestigious System for Change award, and several awards for environmental stewardship from other groups. The awards recognize our health system’s achievements in environmental-sustainability programs and improvements during 2015.
Practice Greenhealth (PGH) System for Change
UH received its fourth consecutive System for Change award for leadership in comprehensive sustainability strategy.
PGH Circle of Excellence in Chemicals
This circle consists of up to 10 hospitals from across the country that have shown outstanding performance in safer chemicals, highlighting those hospitals that are pushing the envelope and driving innovation in sustainability performance in this focus area.
PGH Greenhealth Emerald Award
This award recognizes achievement in environmental sustainability programming and improvements in 2015. The Emerald designation distinguishes these medical centers in the top quartile of hospitals competing nationally for these awards.
PGH Greenhealth Partner for Change
The Greenhealth Partner for Change Award recognizes health care facilities that have implemented a significant number of environmental programs, and continuously improve and expand upon these programs on the path to sustainability.
PGH Partner Recognition
The Partner Recognition award (PR) is for health care facilities that have begun to work on environmental improvements, have achieved progress in several areas, and have at least 10 percent recycling rate for their total waste stream.
Making Medicine Mercury-Free Award
The Making Medicine Mercury-Free award recognizes facilities that have virtually eliminated mercury from their facilities and have made a commitment to continue to be mercury-free.

This award recognizes hospitals and health systems that demonstrate their commitment to environmental stewardship through implementing waste reduction programs, recycling initiatives and other activities to preserve the health of the planet for future generations.
NOACA Commuter Choice Award, Silver
This award is given to organizations for their support of environmentally friendly forms of transportation and implementation of programs that strongly encourage alternative commuting for their employees.
Ohio EPA Encouraging Environmental Excellence (E3) Awards, Silver and Gold
The Ohio EPA E3 Program recognizes an organization’s exceptional achievements in environmental stewardship. Any business, industry, trade association, professional organization or local government of Ohio can be recognized for their commitment to environmental excellence.
