UH OptiWeight Program Helps Employee Lose More Than 40 Pounds

Steve will be the first to admit he did it for the wellness incentives – at first.

“While going through my emails at lunch, I came across one for UH OptiWeight. I glanced at it briefly and noticed you could receive wellness incentives for signing up and completing the program. Lunch ended but I kept thinking about the wellness incentive; besides weight, what was there to lose? So the next day, I signed up.

Right away I was facing an uphill battle – I was the only male in class. But as the weeks went on, I started picking up tips on how to eat better. I started making better choices, learning how to really read labels and found out I didn’t need the extra helpings at dinner or the bedtime snack.

I started to notice I had more energy too. I was able to stay awake longer, accomplish more and was sleeping much better. But when it came time to weigh-in I was still a little nervous; I stepped on the scale, looked down – and lo and behold, I had lost a few pounds.

I traded in the Pepsi for water, and that’s when I noticed the biggest change. By the last week of class, my whole department was commenting on my weight loss. At first I thought they were just trying to make me feel good, but at the final weigh-in 12 weeks later, turns out I had lost a total of 27 pounds.

Since then, I have continued my commitment to making better choices and have lost an additional 14 ½ pounds for a total of 41 ½ pounds since starting UH OptiWeight. This program has helped me begin to achieve my ultimate weight loss goal of 60 pounds. I highly recommend it.”

What motivated you to participate in UH OptiWeight?

Originally it was the wellness incentive, but after seeing how the program helped teach me how to make healthier decisions I started becoming more and more motivated to lose weight.

What unexpected impact did UH OptiWeight have in your life?
What has been your biggest success so far?

A few weekends ago I went for a 10 mile bike ride followed by a 4 mile canoe trip. There is no way I would have been able to do this before losing the weight.
