March 5th, 2013

March is the month we set aside to celebrate, raise awareness, and promote healthy nutrition and wellness. Each year, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has a theme dedicated to help push out important nutrition messages nationwide. This year, the theme fits perfectly with UH OptiWeight. National Nutrition Month 2013’s theme is “Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day.”

“Eat Right” – In UH OptiWeight, we strive to educate you on the “right” way to eat. Debunking myths and tall tales that surround the nutrition community is helpful to understanding how to “eat right.” And, understanding why certain principles can or cannot help you reach your optimal weight is key.

“Your Way” – All of you who are in UH OptiWeight know that there isn’t “one way” to eat right! We support, guide, and encourage you to find the best way to eat healthy for you. “Your way” takes into account your allergies, personal preferences, culture, work schedule, family dynamics, physical activity, and food budget. We do not push out standardized meal plans in UH OptiWeight for this very reason! Everyone is unique and your needs can be met in so many different, yet healthy ways.

“Every Day” – Healthy eating should not be a short journey with an end date in place. I would encourage you to think twice about any diet that has a distinct start and stop date. Eating healthy should be a lifelong journey and something you strive to do every day of the week. Sure, there will be days where you don’t make the best choices and that is okay. That’s life. We fumble and we sometimes fall, and that is completely acceptable. Forgive yourself and move on. At the end of each week, I want you to be able to honestly say to yourself, “I made healthy choices most days this week!”
