I just returned from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Weight Management Group’s Symposium in Indianapolis and my engine is revved up to share some highlights with you! This symposium featured the latest research in weight management with lead investigators presenting their completed studies as well as emerging trends in studies not yet released.

Several key messages kept resurfacing throughout the entire weekend’s lectures by the various presenters. You may want to keep them in mind as you continue on your journey to better health:

  1. The lifestyle changes that we teach work!
  2. Obesity and difficulty in keeping weight off are NOT due to gluttony, laziness, or lack of willpower (no surprise here!). There are biological reasons, namely through adaptive thermogenesis, that make the process more challenging.
  3. Exercise accounts for about 20 percent of weight loss while diet accounts for 80 percent. Therefore, when it comes to exercise, do it for health, not a number on the scale.
  4. Don’t let statement number three depress you. Moving more means experiencing a better quality of life as you age. Simply stated, you can live healthier longer.
  5. Create a wellness vision for yourself as a means to keep motivation strong as you pursue your goals. More about this in upcoming UH OptiWeight II classes!
  6. The best way to avoid late-day cravings – a big issue for many of us – is to fuel up your engine by consuming 30 grams of protein at breakfast!

In summary, if we move a little more and eat a little less, work hard and stay vigilant, remain connected and supported with others on the same journey (OptiWeight II, Virgin Health anyone?); we can achieve our goals and live our best life!
