Whether taking a family trip or heading out of town on business, being away from home can throw you for a loop when it comes eating healthy.

Next week, I will be traveling to sunny Las Vegas to attend a healthcare conference. I’m going to be eating a lot of restaurant meals when I’m traveling, so I need to select foods carefully. I’m concerned because whether I’m at the hotel or at the airport, healthy food options are slim.

My goal is to maintain my weight during my trip, not to gain weight. How am I going to accomplish this?

  • Leave home with a full tummy. The trick to avoiding the temptation of fast food at the airport is by eating a healthy meal before I leave home.
  • Pack healthy snacks. I’m going to pack nonperishable, healthy snacks in my carry-on bag (such as protein bars) so I’ll have healthy munchables for my entire trip. I can keep my hunger satiated between meals so that when I finally sit down to eat, I’m not so famished that I binge on high-calorie foods.
  • Drink tons of water. During the conference, there will be water bottles on the tables for the conference attendees. Having water on hand will remind me to sip it regularly, which will keep my tummy full, prevent dehydration and stop the temptation to drink soda or sugary juice.
  • Load up on fruits and vegetables when I can. I need avoid the infamous Las Vegas all-you-can-eat buffets, because the temptation to overeat will be overwhelming. I’ll need to grab a couple of pieces of fruit from the hotel's breakfast bar or keep healthy snacks on hand for later in the day.

I won’t be gambling while I’m in Las Vegas, but I do need positive vibes so that I make healthy choices. Wish me luck!
