Ireland Cancer Center Scientist Wins American Cancer Society’s Hero of Hope Award:

The American Cancer Society’s Ohio Division has chosen Sanford Markowitz, MD, PhD, of Ireland Cancer Center of University Hospitals Case Medical Center and Case Western Reserve University, to receive its distinguished Hero of Hope Research Medal of Honor in the area of Clinical Research for 2008. Dr. Markowitz will be recognized at a luncheon to be held at Barbara Peterson Ruhlman Conference Center in the Alfred and Norma Lerner Tower at UH Case Medical Center on June 2.

The American Cancer Society’s Hero of Hope Research Medal of Honor recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of cancer research in Ohio in the areas of basic research, clinical research and cancer control (which includes public health, behavioral research, and cancer treatment). The Ohio Division has been recognizing the state’s finest cancer researchers with this award since 2002.

Dr. Markowitz was chosen for his highly significant discoveries that have led to better understanding of the genetics of colon cancer.

University Hospitals Ireland Cancer Center Receives Power of a Partner Award:

Last night, the Susan G. Komen Northeast Ohio Affiliate held its annual Power of a Promise® Appreciation Event at the WKYC Channel 3 studios. This celebration honors the thousands of volunteers and generous sponsors that made possible the $1.2 million recently granted to 21 local agencies in 15 Northeast Ohio counties. Also, recognition goes out to a few individuals and an organization for the extra steps in their partnership efforts.

The Power of a Partner award acknowledges University Hospitals Ireland Cancer Center, the presenting sponsor of several Komen events, including Race for the Cure®, and an endless supporter of spreading the Komen message through various programs and activities. Dr. Paula Silverman accepted the award on behalf of UH.

University Hospitals has proven their dedication to fulfill the promise Komen’s founder, Nancy Brinker, made to her dying sister over 25 years ago: to do anything she can to end breast cancer forever. Celebrating 15 years in NE Ohio and 26 years nationally, Komen for the Cure® focuses on supporting innovative national research grants, education, screening and treatment programs.

UH Patient Featured on Channel 3 News:

The remarkable story of Kaitlyn, who came to the specialists at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital as a toddler with severe epilepsy, will be featured on this week’s edition of “The Health Difference”. Now a healthy and active six year old, Kaitlyn and her family credit the extraordinary Rainbow team with giving her a seizure-free future. Tune in to Channel 3 News Sunday morning at 9 a.m. to see how UH doctors make the Difference.

As part of the 2008 UH Advertising campaign, we are introducing “The Health Difference”, which will run four times a month on Channel 3 News on Thursday nights 11 p.m. and Sunday mornings at 9 a.m. “The Health Difference” will feature two minute long UH patient story segments and will highlight all the wonderful work that UH Doctors, Nurses and Staff accomplish every day.

The staff of the Rainbow Injury Prevention Center reminds you that there are lots of good reasons for buckling up. If you won’t do it for yourself, do it for your family, friends and the people who care about you. In motor vehicle crashes, wearing a seat belt decreases risk of death for front seat occupants by 45 percent and injury by 60 percent.

Buckle up, drive carefully, and make it home safe to the ones you love!

WKYC-TV3 News - Stroke Epidemic Among Middle-Aged Women

Dr. Cathy Sila of the University Hospitals Neurological Institute discussed risk factors for stroke, signs of having a stroke, and steps you can take to reduce the risk factors. Also featured in the segment is UH patient Venetta Perry, who had a stroke earlier this year, and has taken a number of steps to reduce her risk factors. May is National Stroke Awareness Month. IT&S Updates and Outages: May 24 - May 27 :

Saturday, May 24:

S: Drive Users, server scheduled maintenance, starting May 24 at 5 p.m. - May 25 at 12 p.m. Note: Workstations logged on during this time frame must log off and log back on to access the S: drive after this maintenance has been completed.

Sunday, May 25:

Interface Delays to the Mainframe, Physician Portal and any application that receives ADT transactions, orders or test results, scheduled maintenance, 1 - 2 a.m.

EHR – ED Manager, Eclipsys scheduled maintenance, 1 - 2:30 a.m.

Tuesday, May 27:

Attention UH Geauga Medical Center Staff: In preparation for the go-live of the Radiological PACS system, the IT&S Network staff will be adding a second redundant data circuit between UH Geauga Medical Center and the UH Cleveland Data Center. This maintenance will take place on Tuesday, May 20, from 7-9 p.m. IT&S does not anticipate any downtime but wishes to advise you that a potential disruption may occur during this timeframe while the network may take a moment to recalculate.
