Cutting-Edge Surgical Nursing Update

Nurses are invited to attend a surgical nursing symposium on Saturday, April 26, in Frohing Auditorium at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. The symposium, presented by the Department of Surgery’s clinical nursing staff, will provide a comprehensive update on key topics in evidenced-based surgical nursing practice, including current trends in caring for the perioperative patient in several surgical subspecialties.

The target audience includes professional nurses who work closely with surgical patients, family members and other health care professionals to plan, implement and evaluate treatment as well as perioperative nurses in hospital surgical departments, day-surgery units (ambulatory surgery), clinics and physicians offices.

Air Handler Shutdown in Lerner Tower

The air handler (AHU-5) that provides air conditioning service to Lerner Tower will shut down daily from 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. beginning Saturday, April 12, through Friday, April 18. The air handler unit will run evenings and nights to enable patient comfort. The renovation will include the replacement of four chilled water coils and one steam coil in order to provide improved cooling and heating for staff and patients.

Areas that will be affected during the shut down are listed as follows:

  • Sub-basement elevator lobbies
  • 1st floor main hallway to Bolwell and adjoining offices
  • 2nd floor elevator lobbies
  • 3rd to 5th floor south wing patient rooms
  • 7th to 9th floor south wing patient rooms

Cornell Entrance to Lerner Tower – Temporary Closure

The Cornell entrance to Lerner Tower will be closed at 11:00 p.m. Friday, April 11 through 3:00 p.m. Saturday, April 12. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, however the action is necessary to accommodate placement of a crane to lift construction materials related to an air handler renovation project.

L.I.F.E. – A Stroke Support Group

The staff at University Hospitals Case Medical Center has recognized the need for increased support and education to patients and their families whose lives have been affected by a stroke. L.I.F.E. is an acronym for Living for Independence with the Freedoms of Equality. The goals of L.I.F.E. are: to improve stroke recovery, offer educational and adaptive equipment resources and to provide community assistance and opportunities to socialize in a therapeutic recreation environment.

Kathleen Vidal, RN, BSN, director of nursing practice development, of University Hospitals Case Medical Center, was a guest on WCPN 90.3 FM radio this morning during Plain Dealer reporter Regina Brett's 9 a.m. radio program, which focused on Nursing Nuances. Kathleen joined other nursing experts from Northeast Ohio to discuss patient-centered care and its importance throughout University Hospitals. Kathleen highlighted a new care delivery model, Relationship Based Care, which further fosters positive relationships between patients, their families and caregivers. The guests talked with Regina Brett about the significance of the nursing role in the patient experience and how nurses can serve as advocates for patients and their families.  Read More
