Transition of UH Weekly Report to the UH Intranet

In an effort to streamline communications and ensure information employees need to do their jobs is easily accessible, University Hospitals Internal Communications team will soon transition this e-newsletter to the intranet home page.

Beginning Nov. 28, an email containing the week’s top news headlines and a link to the intranet will be emailed to all employees every Monday in place of UH Weekly Report. New submission guidelines are available here. UH intranet news items will be published for a minimum of three business days.

Benefits Open Enrollment Ends Nov. 22

Tomorrow, Tuesday, Nov. 22, is the last day to enroll for 2012 benefits. Eligible employees can visit UHWellness.org to enroll and learn about benefit changes.

UH is offering wellness credits to help eligible employees reduce their medical coverage costs. Click here for the steps employees can begin taking now to earn wellness credits for 2012. Employees are also encouraged to designate a beneficiary for life insurance during open enrollment.

For questions, call the HR Wellness Center at 1-877-HR1-PLACE (1-877-471-7522) Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Extended hours will be provided until 7 p.m. on Nov. 21.

UH Neurological Institute’s Brain Health and Memory Center

The University Hospitals Neurological Institute's Center for Memory and Cognition is now the Brain Health and Memory Center. The Center was renamed to better reflect the scope of its patient care activities. The UH Brain Health and Memory Center is a multi-disciplinary effort focused on the understanding and preservation of memory and cognitive function, including memory, executive functions (learning, decision making and judgment), language and behavior. The UH Brain Health and Memory Center provides innovative, integrated and individualized programs in neuropsychology and cognitive rehabilitation; educational programs for residents/fellows and the community; clinical trials; the Foley ElderHealth Center practice with all of its sub-populations (Alzheimer's disease, normal pressure hydrocephalus, mild cognitive impairment, Brain Health Executive Wellness); and numerous research collaborations. Alan J. Lerner, MD, serves as Director of the UH Brain Health and Memory Center. He also serves as a Professor of Neurology for the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

Diversity Spotlight: Saving Lives at Home and Abroad

In January 2011, Margaret D. Larkins-Pettigrew, MD, MED, MPPM, FACOG and Assistant Professor and Director of Global Health Obstetrics Gynecology and Reproductive Biology at UH MacDonald Women’s Hospital, received a Minority Faculty Development Award. The award recognizes Dr. Larkins-Pettigrew for her extensive work in global health through the Women, Neonates, Diversity, Outreach, Opportunity, and Research (WONDOOR) program. WONDOOR is an innovative global health program that grew out of Dr. Larkins-Pettigrew’s belief that women should have access quality health care no matter where they are living.

University Hospitals established the Minority Faculty Development Award Program to promote the retention and development of underrepresented ethnic minority faculty. Funds may be used for start up, innovative medical research, clinical training or other relevant professional development.

Accounts Payable Document Submission Requirements

The Accounts Payable Department is committed to processing supplier invoices, supplier set-up documents and employee expense reimbursements in an accurate and timely manner. As a reminder, employees can help ensure invoices are processed quickly by following the submission guidelines below.

UH policy requires all purchase order (PO) invoices contain valid PO numbers. Additionally, suppliers must directly submit PO invoices to Accounts Payable. Please contact suppliers that send PO invoices to your department to make sure they are familiar with the following submission methods:

  1. Electronically
    Electronic data interface (EDI) can be done through the Global Healthcare Exchange, Sterling, spreadsheet upload, etc. Suppliers can contact Mark Chislow at 216-286-6349 with questions.
  1. Email
    If an image of the invoice is not needed to enter the receipt in iProcurement (most cases), email AP_PO_Invoice_Standard@UHhospitals.org.  
    If an image of the invoice needs to included, scan at a resolution of 300 DPI, save as PDF or TIFF and send via email to AP_Receipt_Required@UHhospitals.org.

Adopt a Family this Holiday Season

 The Social Work Department of UH Case Medical Center invites all employees and departments to adopt a family in need this holiday season. Participants will be asked to purchase clothes, toys and household items for identified families. Individual gift cards for gas, groceries and major stores are also welcome. LASIK Surgery 20 Percent Discounts Available Starting Dec. 1

UH Eye Institute will begin offering LASIK eye surgery Thursday, Dec.1 to the general public. In addition, UH employees can receive a 20 percent discount on this elective procedure.

The typical LASIK procedure performed by UH Eye Institute Custom LASIK Center will cost $4,000 ($2,000 per eye).  With the 20 percent discount, UH employees will pay approximately $3,200 ($1,600 per eye) for the procedure. UH employees with balances remaining in their health saving accounts (HSAs) are encouraged to take advantage of this discount.

UH Eye Institute staff is dedicated to providing a LASIK experience that is comfortable and productive, offering the most advanced LASIK technology, experienced doctors and unmatched service.

Employees Receive 10 Percent off Acupuncture and Massage

The Center for Women’s Health located at UH Chagrin Highlands Health Center (suite 4100) provides a variety of medical massage and acupuncture treatments to help release muscular tension and pain, increase circulation and joint flexibility, improve overall well-being and promote faster healing of injured muscular tissue. UH employees receive a 10 percent discount on massage and acupuncture from the center. Massage appointments are available Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays as well as one Saturday a month. Acupuncture appointments are available on Tuesdays.

Michele C. Walsh, MD, MS, who received the 2011 Northeast Ohio March of Dimes Franklin D. Roosevelt Award for her exemplary leadership and commitment to improving the health of babies.

Jeffery Auletta, MD, Pediatric Hematologist and Oncologist, who was selected as the American Red Cross Medical People’s Choice Award recipient. WDOK Rainbow Radiothon Dec. 9

The largest annual fundraiser for the Children’s Miracle Network at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital is around the corner. On Friday, Dec. 9, Trapper Jack, Terry Moir and Jim McIntyre will broadcast live from the Rainbow Performance Area from 6 a.m.-7p.m. Employees who are unable to attend in person can turn into radio station WDOK 102.1. This year listeners will have the opportunity to win an iPad when they sign up to become Miracle Maker and donate $20 per month to the cause. Participants Needed for Asthma Clinical Research Trials

The UH Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital Asthma Center is conducting two clinical research studies. The first study will examine the link between vitamin D and the management of asthma symptoms and attacks. Eligible participants must be 18 years or older and have had asthma for at least one year.

The second study will focus on preventing excessive coughing or wheezing from occurring in children when they have a cold virus. Eligible participants must be 1-5 years old and have previously received treatment for wheezing.

A silent auction to benefit United Way will be held in the cafeteria Dec. 7 and 8. Employees are invited to cast their bid on home décor, appliances, electronics, fitness gear, kitchen accessories and more to benefit community members in need this holiday season. A digital print commissioned by UH’s own Steve Standley, Chief Administrative Officer, will also be auctioned off to the highest bidder. Winners will be announced Dec. 8 at 2 p.m.
