Oncology nurses at the University Hospitals Ireland Cancer Center now University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center work closely with other members of the multidisciplinary team to provide care that is patient-centered. Throughout the care experience, from diagnosis to treatment to home care, oncology nurses offer their expertise to help patients heal—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Oncology nurses:
- Work closely with the patient, family, and members of the health care team in providing care
- Advocate for the patient
- Guide the patient in making decisions about treatment
- Teach the patient and family about cancer, treatment, and coping with and managing the side effects of treatment
- Coach the patient throughout the cancer experience
- Act as a liaison to physicians and other members of the team
