Computerized Tomography (CT) – CT imaging uses special X-ray equipment to produce multiple images or pictures of the inside of the body and a computer to join them together in cross-sectional views of the area being studied. The images can then be reviewed on a computer monitor.

What to expect

CT scans are performed with you lying on a table. The table moves through a large opening in the middle of the scanner. Certain exams of the chest and abdomen require you to hold your breath for a short period of time. Many of the procedures require an IV contrast injection. The technologist will gently start an IV and explain the specific procedure to you. The contrast injection may make you feel warm and give you a metallic taste in your mouth. These sensations will only last a brief minute.

CT scans of the abdomen often require the use of oral contrast. This contrast is to be drank 2 hours before your appointment time. The oral contrast is available in the Diagnostic Imaging Department.

The time from when we call you out of the waiting room to the time your exam is completed will take approximately 30 minutes.

Preparing for Your Exam

Preparations will vary depending on your specific procedure. The proper preps will be discussed during the scheduling process.

  • Please avoid wearing any jewelry or clothing that has metal on it if it will be in the area of your scan.
  • Bring a list of all of your medications and vitamins that you are taking. Please include the dosage.
  • Bring the physician's order.
  • Arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment. You will need to check in and you will be asked to fill out a medical history questionnaire.
  • Drink plenty of fluids the day BEFORE your exam unless you have been instructed otherwise.
  • If your physician ordered for you to have IV contrast we will need you to have lab work (Bun and creatinine) within the past 30 days. This is only required if you are diabetic or 50 years old or more.
