Goals and characteristics
The goal of this fellowship is to provide the Fellow with a well-rounded clinical and research experience involving all aspects of adult joint reconstructive and arthritis surgery. Although the major focus of the fellowship is on primary and revision joint replacement surgery, the Fellow will also be exposed to joint-preserving surgical procedures (periacetabular and knee osteotomies) and total shoulder arthroplasty.
Attending staff is trained in MIS unicompartmental knee replacement, mini-incision THA, 2-incision THA, and quad-sparing TKR. More than 800 total joint replacements are performed annually. Fellows are expected to be actively involved in clinically related research during their fellowship year, which is facilitated by a large implant retrieval program and a computerized joint replacement patient registry. Opportunities also exist for the Fellow to become involved in basic science research in a variety of areas related to the biology, mechanics, and materials of joint replacement implants.
Fellows will participate in the educational programs at University Hospitals of Cleveland and the Cleveland VA Medical Center. Additional orthopaedic faculty participating in the program include research scientists Edward M. Greenfield, PhD, and Clare M. Rimnac, PhD.
