Types of Strokes

Ischemic
  • Most common type of stroke
  • Accounts for approximately 83% of strokes
  • Most often caused by a blood clot

Hemorrhagic
  • Most often caused by a rupturing blood vessel which causes bleeding into the brain
  • Accounts for approximately 17% of strokes
  • Responsible for more than 30% of all stroke deaths

TIA - TRANSIENT ISCHEMIC ATTACK
  • A temporary interruption of blood flow to the brain, lasting for a few minutes up to 1 hour
  • Often called a “Mini Stroke”
  • Causes a loss of function in the area of the body that is controlled by the affected portion of the brain
  • Symptoms are temporary and do not result in permanent brain injury
  • The loss of blood supply to the brain is most often caused by a clot that spontaneously forms in a blood vessel within the brain and then resolves itself.
  • More than 1/3 of patients will go on to have a full blown stroke, so please do not ignore the symptoms
