• Often the result of temporary stress, anxiety, fatigue or anger
  • Tension headache classification is broken down into two subcategories: episodic and chronic
    • The difference is the frequency of the headaches
    • A tension headache that seems to occur almost every day or has been going on for an extended period of time is considered chronic
    • Chronic tension headaches are more likely related to physical problems, psychological issues, or depression and not stress, anxiety, or fatigue

Symptoms

  • Tight/stiff muscles in the head and neck
  • Pressure sensation
  • Soreness at the temples
  • Tightening band-like sensation around the head

Treatment

  • Episodic: Over-the-counter medications (e.g. aspirin)
  • Chronic: Prescription medications (e.g. anti-inflammatory, pain relievers, etc.)
  • Self-help measures (e.g. relaxation exercises)
