Tension Headache Overview
Tension Headache
- Often the result of temporary stress, anxiety, fatigue or anger
- Tension headache classification is broken down into two subcategories: episodic and chronic
- The difference is the frequency of the headaches
- A tension headache that seems to occur almost every day or has been going on for an extended period of time is considered chronic
- Chronic tension headaches are more likely related to physical problems, psychological issues, or depression and not stress, anxiety, or fatigue
Symptoms
- Tight/stiff muscles in the head and neck
- Pressure sensation
- Soreness at the temples
- Tightening band-like sensation around the head
Treatment
- Episodic: Over-the-counter medications (e.g. aspirin)
- Chronic: Prescription medications (e.g. anti-inflammatory, pain relievers, etc.)
- Self-help measures (e.g. relaxation exercises)
