Epilepsy Care Focused on Eliminating Seizures and Enhancing Patient Comfort
University Hospitals Neurological Institute’s Epilepsy Center offers the experience, skills and knowledge required to help those with epilepsy lead more comfortable, fulfilling lives. In a growing number of cases, this includes completely eliminating seizures.
We specialize in a variety of services, including:
Our center holds a Level IV designation, which is the highest ranking from the National Association of Epilepsy Centers. As a UH Neurological Institute Center of Excellence, it brings together leading experts across many different areas of specialty who collaborate using the latest clinical advances, technologies and research projects. Our center provides the highest level of epilepsy services and testing for adults and children.
In the past, individuals with recurring seizures often suffered for their entire lives. Today, we can control most seizures with appropriate medication and cure others through accurate evaluations using the latest diagnostic technologies and surgery.
We offer access to clinical drug trials, novel treatment techniques, advanced surgical therapies and close collaboration with Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Our team also offers consultations for patients whose previous treatments have failed.
In collaboration with University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital, team members also provide a wide range of treatment options specifically designed for children with epilepsy.
Expert Child-Friendly Services
UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital has a dedicated pediatric epilepsy team that provides specialized care for children undergoing surgery. An integral part of the Epilepsy Center, this team ensures that each child undergoes a personalized pre-surgical evaluation with the latest advances in clinical management and technology.
Our comprehensive, family-centered approach is designed to achieve better seizure control, improve the child’s quality of life and optimize the child’s future.
Our Transition for Teens Clinic provides continuity of care as adolescent epilepsy patients transition to adult care. Comprised of both adult and pediatric epileptologists, this program creates an easy and seamless transition of care to teen patients entering adulthood that have continuing medical issues. This special program addresses the unique needs and concerns of adolescents and ensures a smooth transition of specialized epilepsy care from child to adult services.
We also offer special programs for children experiencing seizures for the first time. Our New Onset Seizure Clinic provides expert diagnostic services, treatment and follow-up care. Diagnostic testing helps us to accurately confirm the diagnosis, identify the cause of seizures and initiate appropriate treatment with medications. We also advise parents and patients on safety issues and behaviors that may reduce the risk for further seizures.
With access to a vast number of specialists and surgeons, as well as the dedicated Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), our center offers the most advanced techniques for diagnosing, managing and treating epilepsy in infants and children.
