Fast Test
F = FACE
Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?
A = ARMS
Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
S = SPEECH
Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence. Does the speech sound slurred or strange?
T = TIME
If you observe any of these signs, call 9-1-1.
Medical Diagnosis
- Doctor will take your medical history.
- Tests will be typically be conducted to determine the cause of the suspected stroke.
- CAT Scan or MRI Scan
- Angiogram
- Ultrasound
- Blood Tests
Treatment
TPA
- Powerful “clot-buster” medication.
- If given within the first three hours after onset of symptoms, TPA can significantly improve the patient’s outcome.
- The sooner TPA is started, the better the outcome.
Managing Medical Problems
- Lower blood pressure, control diabetes, etc.
Rehabilitation
- Physical, Occupational, and Speech therapies
